What are some things I should avoid saying to my friend before their surgery?

I would encourage you to avoid saying to your friend before their surgery:

I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.” While this may be well-intentioned, it can sometimes come across as a way of avoiding deeper conversations or offering more concrete support.

Instead, consider asking your friend how you can be there for them during this time.

Everything will be fine.” It’s natural to want to reassure your friend, but it’s important to recognize that they may be feeling anxious or uncertain about their surgery.

Instead of making blanket statements, try to validate their feelings and offer support.

“I know exactly how you feel.” Even if you have had a similar experience, it’s important to remember that everyone’s experiences are unique.

Instead of trying to relate to your friend’s situation, try to listen and offer empathy.

You shouldn’t worry so much.” While it’s true that worry can be unhelpful, it’s important to recognize that it’s a natural response to stress and uncertainty.

Instead of telling your friend not to worry, try to offer them ways to manage their anxiety, such as through relaxation techniques or seeking support from others.

Remember, the most important thing is to be there for them in a loving and supportive way.
